Notions of the supernatural have played a key role in the development of human cultures and societies across the planet. Indeed, wherever human beings are to be found we encounter variegated beliefs in the existence of invisible worlds inhabited by powerful spirits, demons and deities, and hear tales of paranormal abilities and extraordinary phenomena. Such ideas are transmitted, and so perpetuated, in a variety of ways: through religion, ritual, myth and story telling. We can, therefore, learn much about these widespread human beliefs, and associated practices, from an analysis of the themes and motifs presented within these traditions.
